Mathematics: K-8 Teachers

Algebra Add-on Endorsement

As a greater percentage of students are studying Algebra I in eighth grade there is a growing need for more teachers who are well prepared to teach algebra. With support from the United States Department of Education’s Math and Science Partnership program through the Virginia Department of Education the Coalition is leading an effort to develop a preparation program that enables middle school mathematics teachers to earn Virginia ‘ s Algebra I Add-on endorsement.

The work has been lead by Coalition staff members Loren Pitt, UVA, and  Margie Mason, W&M. Under their leadership a team of university and school faculty is developing a set of courses that assures that teachers of algebra have a deep understanding of the mathematics they teach and an understanding of its use in applications and in subsequent mathematics and science courses. This set of courses is being offered on a pilot basis at a number of universities and colleges throughout the state.
