The Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition engages in various policy initiatives intended to fulfill its core mission, such as:
- Working with elected officials concerning pending legislation, studies and regulatory changes that may affect math and science education in Virginia;
- Developing position papers and presentations (often building on Coalition research and white papers) addressing specific issues of concern that are submitted or made to math and science education policy-makers for their consideration as legislation, regulations or agency policy is developed or to suggest changes that are needed;
- Communicating regularly with education agency leaders and staff regarding implementation of math and science programs and curricula; and
- Reviewing and commenting on Standards of Achievement, Standards of Learning, curricula, and licensure requirements affecting math and science education.
