In March 2008, the Virginia Mathematics & Science Coalition formed the Middle School Mathematics Specialists Task Force and charged it with the following tasks:
- Define the role and responsibilities of Middle School Mathematics Specialists
- Identify the knowledge and competencies needed for a Middle School Mathematics Specialists to be successful.
- Describe what the preparation of Middle School Mathematics Specialists should involve, including work with principals, supervisors and other instructional staff
- Explain how the role of a Middle School Mathematics Specialists can compliment and enhance the organizational structure of a school and a school division.
- Describe ways to sustain a successful Middle School Mathematics Specialists program.
The Taskforce was chaired by Vandi Hodges and Joy Whitenack.
